European Footwork

with Ryan Maha

College point guard Ryan Maha walks us through the Euro-Style wing attack moves first made famous by Kiki Vandeweghe and more recently by players like Kobe Bryant and Stephen Curry.

In this series of drills, Ryan describes the unorthodox footwork, head fakes and counter moves you can use to get a great first step on your defender and attack the rim every time you catch the ball on the wing.

Points of Emphasis

  1. Address the ball with your inside pivot foot.
  2. Instead of facing up to the basket, show your defender your shoulder.
  3. Drop step toward the basket (even from this far away from the hoop).
  4. Try to put the defender on your backside.
  5. Use your first step to attack the basket or the lane.

Drop-Step for a Layup

When you catch the ball, address it with your inside foot. For the right side of the court, this will be your right foot (with your back to the basket). For the left side of the court, this will be your left foot (with your back to the basket).

  1. Give your defender your shoulder. Keep the ball protected against your hip.
  2. Drop step toward the basket. For the right side of the court, this means you'll use your left leg to step past the defender and dribble toward the hoop. For the left side of the court, you'll use your right leg.
  3. Get the defender on your back-side and attack the basket.

Drop Step Swing-Through

This is a counter for the Drop Step that you can use when the defender has taken away the baseline

  1. When you catch the ball, address it with your inside foot. For the right side of the court, this will be your right foot (with your back to the basket). For the left side of the court, this will be your left foot (with your back to the basket).
  2. Give your defender your shoulder. Keep the ball protected against your hip.
  3. Swing the ball from your sideline-facing hip to your inside hip.
  4. Get to the middle of the court.
